10 Ways to Prepare Your Pup for 4th of July Fireworks
1 Keep them indoors.
Whenever possible, keep the outdoor visits to a minimum and stay home if you can instead of traveling.
2 Desensitize your pup.
Play recording of fireworks during playtime with your dog to associate the sound with positive experiences.
3 Exercise early in the day.
Move any outdoor activities to earlier in the day when the likelihood of fireworks is less likely.
4 Build a safe space.
Anxious dogs like the feeling of security a crate provides. Cozy it up with a soft blanket and their favorite stuffed toy.
5 Use calming treats.
Calming chews or bites, ask your vet for recommendations.
6 Secure your property.
Make sure there are no gaps in your fencing or ways for your pup to escape your yard.
7 Consider supplements.
If you’ve tried the others and still no improvement, you could consider calming supplements.
Ask vet for advice.
8 Distract with toys.
Toys, especially treat-dispensing toys, will keep your dog busy and focused on fun.
9 Add identification to your pup.
Have recent pictures of your dog on hand in case they get out. Also, ensure that the info on the tag and collar is up to date with all necessary information.
10 Consider microchipping your pup.
Collars and tags can come off, but microchipping is a permanent way to identify and track your dog. Read more about why this is a great method to consider.
This is a process we do at A Dog’s Best Friend and can scan and track your dog, as well. Contact us to learn more or just add to your daycare visit!
